The Wallonia Foreign Trade and Investment Agency (AWEX) is the Wallonia Region of Belgium’s government agency in charge of foreign trade promotion and foreign investment attraction. The agency has a worldwide network of 105 Economic and Trade Attachés. AWEX has been certified ISO 9001 since April 2002.

* As a foreign trade agency, AWEX carries out a mission of promotion and information for the benefit of both Wallonia and the foreign business community.
Upon request, AWEX assists buyers, decision-makers, importers and foreign prospects by:
• Providing economic data on Wallonia and its export potential;
• Disseminating information on products and services from companies located in Wallonia;
• Identifying companies in Wallonia for international partnerships;
• Distributing lists of exporters from Wallonia.

* As an export partner for Wallonia-based companies, Awex offers a wide range of export-oriented services and activities:
• General and commercial information on foreign markets;
• Market studies tailored to specific areas upon request;
• Organization and planning of marketing activities (international trade shows, economic missions, sector-based con-tact days...);
• Establishing contacts with international organizations;
• Promoting Wallonia’s export potential abroad;
• Financial support and export financing;
• Training in international careers.

* As a foreign investment agency, AWEX - via its Office for Foreign Investors (OFI) – has an overall responsibility for the attraction of foreign investment in Wallonia. This includes seeking out and providing information to potential foreign investors. The Agency also offers a pro-active follow-up service to investors already established in Wallonia. In addition, it is in charge of identifying new foreign investors for the acquisition of industrial sites under restructuring process.

The Brussels Institute for Environment Management, or Brussels Environment, is the environmental administration for the Brussels-Capital Region, as well as for the energy.

Since 1989, the Belgian regions have had authority over such important matters as the economy, employment, public works, transport, urban planning and environment.

The Institute was set up as a research, planning and advisory organisation as well as being a body responsible for authorisation, surveillance and control. As its authority extends to the areas of waste, air quality, noise, green spaces, water, soil and energy it has a leading role to play in the environmental management of the Brussels-Capital Region.

The Delegation of Wallonia-Brussels, permanent diplomatic representative of the Governments of the French Community of Belgium, the Walloon Region and the Cocof (the French Community Commission of the Region Brussels-Capital) in Eastern Europe (accredited for Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Moldavia), develops the programmes decided by the Permanent Mixed Commissions (cooperation and partnership programmes).

Three main lines have been chosen for Bulgaria: higher education and fundamental research, cultural diversity, teaching the French language, continuous training of the professionals in the health and social affairs systems.

As for Romania, the main lines that have been chosen are environment, education, cultural diversity and support of the social workers.

Along with developing these programmes, the Delegation of Wallonia-Brussels does its best to support the exchanges between the French-speaking Belgians and Eastern Europe; to this end, the Delegation offers its support and contacts to all project initiators, so that they can best develop their initiatives.

The Delegation of Wallonia-Brussels has strong connections with the attachés and the Economic and Commercial Bureaux of the Walloon Region (AWEX), as well as with the Embassies of Belgium.

The Delegation of Wallonia-Brussels regularly organises cultural and scientific activities.

The Belgian Foreign Trade Agency is a public body with a legal status. It was set up through the Co-operation Agreement concluded between the Belgian federal government and the three Belgian regional governments on May 24th, 2002.
The Agency is run by a Board of Directors and its Honorary President is His Royal Highness Prince Philippe of Belgium.

The Agency's main tasks are defined as follows in the Co-operation Agreement :
* Organisation of joint economic missions;
* Collecting, organising and circulating information, studies and documentation on external markets on behalf of the regional export promotion organisations.
The regional export organisations (Flanders Investment & Trade, Walloon Export & Foreign Investment Agency & Brussels Export) are the single contact point for Belgian exporting companies.
